It's a battle on the mound of SEC transfer arms. Minnesota's RHP junior Texas A&M transfer Isaac Morton vs. Indiana's LHP grad Mizzou transfer Tony Neubeck.

Morton has a 2.05 ERA on the season with a 1.18 WHIP. I watched film from his game at Illinois last Saturday and it was impressive. His 4-seam fastball is commanded well to both sides of the plate at 92-93, touching 94. He keeps the velocity around 92 for most of his outing. He starts fastball heavy and starts peppering in a variety of offspeed.

Strikeout ends the frame. Neubeck under 30 pitches, so despite the trouble, he managed the inning under 10 pitches. This is something important to track as the Hoosiers used 8 innings of bullpen yesterday.

Caleb Koskie is the 4-hole hitter. Jeff Mercer told us that he likes an on-base guy in that slot. Probably just for this situation where the top of the order goes down in order against a good starter.

Cole Decker collects a liner in centerfield to end the frame. The Gophers take a lead on two hits that beat the shift. Neubeck still under 60 pitches. He should be able to at least get through the fifth, barring a problem.

Morton throws a back-foot slider on the first pitch to Hanley that he swings at for strike one. Hanley smokes a ball the other way with spin for the first out. Koskie lifts one almost to the warning track in left center, which is caught despite some miscommunication between the outfielders.

Caleb Koskie drives in a run, but the Hoosiers come up with another way to end an inning on a double play. With Koskie on second, Denny on third and one out, a chopper to short gets the batter runner. Denny wasn't going on contact and retreats to third base while Koskie advances to third base and gets into a rundown, but not enough time to allow Denny to score.
