entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 9:23 a.m.:
I'm on-site at Charles Schwab Field for Day 3 of the B1G Tourney. The Indiana/Iowa game has been moved to tonight (10pm ET) to avoid inclement weather coming into the Omaha area Friday. As a result, Michigan/UCLA will start the slate at 10am ET. Three games total will be played before the Hoosier's season finale. If any games run late, the IU/Iowa game start time could get pushed back. I will update this blog throughout the day.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 11:28 a.m.:
We are slightly over time at 4 innings/85 minutes in for the morning game. If the pace picks up, this one has a chance to end on-time. Michigan leads 4-3. They are using a freshman as true starter, not even getting the bullpen up when he gets in trouble.
UCLA is staffing it and has already made two pitching changes, both mid-inning.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 12:25 p.m.:
E7: no. 13 UCLA-4, Michigan-5 35 minutes to finish the last two innings on time. Hearing rumors here that there will be efforts made to keep things on time. I think a full hour between games (especially "dead" games) is unnecessary. 40-45 minutes is usually sufficient. So it's possible IU/Iowa starts on time tonight.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 12:51 p.m.:
E8: no. 13 UCLA-7, Michigan-5 With UCLA the home team we are 3 outs away from the end of this one. Very likely the first one will end on time now. (Watch Michigan send this to extras now)
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 12:58 p.m.:
FINAL: no. 13 UCLA-7, Michigan-5 UCLA goes 2-0 in their pool. 2-and-a-Q for Michigan. Game under three hours so this increases odds that Indiana's game with Iowa will start on time (10pm ET) late tonight.
UCLA will face Iowa Saturday in a semi-final.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 2:24 p.m.:
I've now settled in to watch game 2 of the day between Penn State and USC. This is only one of three games with meaning for semi-final advancement today. Penn State defeated Washington yesterday and leads 1-0 after the first half inning here today. I'm personally hoping to see at least two representatives from outside the West Coast making the semifinals. The other opportunity will be when Nebraska takes on Oregon tomorrow. Iowa is already in for Pool C, the only Pool without a West Coast team in it.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 4:20 p.m.:
Penn State and USC are locked in a great one. Tied 1-1 after 6 innings. We are about 15 minutes behind schedule, but this is the one game today that "counts" for the actual tournament so as tight as it is, I would expect it to run a bit longer in time. I will update this with what I idea the B1G officials have on IU/Iowa gametime.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 4:44 p.m.:
Game is moving quickly now... but it's still tied in the bottom of the 8th inning. So, it might end on time or it might be extra innings. I'll keep you posted.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 4:57 p.m.:
Penn State leads USC 2-1 top of the 9th. It's possible it won't go much over in time. It is a great game.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 5:10 p.m.:
Penn State wins 2-1 and eliminates both West Coast team in their pool. Third game of the day (Oregon vs. Michigan State) is set for 5:10pm CT (6:10pm ET) so we are only 10 minutes behind so far after two games.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 7:45 p.m.:
Oregon leads Michigan State 2-1 in the middle of the fifth inning. This is on pace to end at 8:15pm CT/9:15pm ET which would require only a short delay on first pitch of Indiana/Iowa. I will update this game header once the official announcement is made.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 8:17 p.m.:
Michigan State scores an unearned run in the 7th. Tied 2-2 at the stretch. Moving quickly, but extras could be the delay if one team doesn't break out soon.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 8:27 p.m.:
Oregon gets the run right back. Ducks lead 3-2, B7 with just one out. This was after a 10-pitch walk and now there is a mid-inning pitching change. Oregon is the designated home team so if they hold off the Spartans this would end after the top of the 9th.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 8:29 p.m.:
Another Oregon run. Still just one out.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 8:52 p.m.:
Heading to the top of the 9th. Oregon needs 3 outs to end this. Could actually end up with the IU/Iowa game starting close to on time.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 8:58 p.m.:
Oregon wins at 7:58pm CT so that means IU/Iowa will start on time.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 9:40 p.m.:
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 9:43 p.m.:
Jasen Oliver will start at third base and bat ninth. That moves Devin Taylor to the top of the order and the most recent lineup shifts up one place behind Taylor.
Graduate student righty Cole Gilley will get the nod on the mound.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 9:52 p.m.:
It is a strange scenario where we know going in that this is the last game of the season. Since the team moved to Bart Kaufman Field in 2013 that has happened only once: in the All-B1G 2021 42-game regular season when there was no B1G Tournament and Indiana was clearly not in a good enough position to get an at-large bid.
While seniors were honored a couple of weeks ago, there are several other Hoosiers who likely suit up in Cream & Crimson for the last time.
Most notably: junior outfielder Devin Taylor (Indiana's career home run king), who is projected to go in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft. One of the best ever in the program.
Redshirt sophomore outfielder Korbyn Dickerson is project within the first three rounds of the draft. Tyler Cerny and Jasen Oliver has also shown up on MLB Draft boards and multiple players are draft eligible. Sometimes there are surprises.

Hanley snags a liner. Gilley strands them loaded.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 10:23 p.m.:
Cole Gilley does not have consistent command so far, but he managed to work through the first inning. It doesn't seem to be one particular pitch. I saw him land a fastball, cutter, and breaking ball all for strikes at some point in the inning.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 10:25 p.m.:
Hogan Denny whiffs at a 2-2 off-speed pitch that dropped out of the zone.

Team Totals:
Hoosiers: 0 runs | 0 hits | 0 errors
Hawkeyes: 0 runs | 1 hits | 0 errors
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 10:34 p.m.:
Another pop-up. Nice inning for Gilley. The sliders are bit too much off the plate to be competitive but the fastball/cutter mix is working quite well. Mostly pitch from ahead is helping as well.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 10:39 p.m.:
[CTRL + V] Andrew Wiggins draws a 1-out walk.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 10:40 p.m.:

entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 10:48 p.m.:
RHP Tyler Guerin is the new Iowa pitcher. The freshman has logged 16.0 innings on the season with an eye-popping 25 strikeouts. He's also walked 12 and that what he does to Dickerson to start his outing.

entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 10:54 p.m.:

Now Iowa Head Coach Rick Heller strolls out and the Hawkeyes will make a pitching change.
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 11:12 p.m.:
A lefty with more walks than innings is not who I would go to behind 2-0 to Wiggins... but that's just me. Iowa is clearly not interested in using much trusted pitching in this game (and I do not blame them).
entry by Carl - May 22, 2025, 11:13 p.m.:
